Milestones

July 11, 2019 By Helena Artmann

Calgary, Alberta

It’s been so long that I am not even sure how to start this blog post. Maybe with the most recent accomplishment of my son: he is now 12 and for the first time in his life he is spending a full week with our friends in Calgary, taking the public transit – an hour and a half to get to where he needs to go every morning! – and spending the day at the University of Calgary Minds in Motion Summer Camp!

It is a major accomplishment from someone living his whole life in a small town and never having to deal with long distance commute. He turned 12 in May and is enjoying the freedom that using public transit can give you. It is worth mentioning that he has a phone that he can Google where he wants to go and Google will give him absolutely everything he needs to get there.

It also gives me a pinpoint with the real time and location of him when I use the app Find Device on Android! This certainly helps when on the other side of the line is a boy that just uses his phone when suits him… ๐Ÿ™

As hard as it is for a widow with a single son to see him growing and starting to fly, it is amazing to give him those tools and see him using them. I wouldn’t be doing him any favor if I didn’t do it this way. And it fills my heart with pride seeing him growing independently.

This year is the first in the last 15 that I am single. I am enjoying it more than I would like to admit… ๐Ÿ˜€ Life is busy with businesses and some puzzles to solve as a business owner, mountain biking and trying to get better at it, visiting the gym regularly and the occasional date to keep the ball rolling. Friends also keep me occupied filling it with lightness, love and fun.

Life is good.

In August 2010, my husband was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. He passed away on Jan 05, 2013, at home.

This blog is the result of what I learned during these difficult times and how I am grieving through my son.
